Five Alive
California League pitcher Mike Schultz throws five strikeouts
in one inning.
07.16.04 - Lancaster, CA – Lancaster JetHawks right-handed pitcher Mike
Schultz did the highly improbable on Thursday July 16.
The 6'7", 213 lb. Schultz managed to strike out five batters in one inning, tying the professional baseball record.
Schultz whiffed five Rancho Cucamonga Quakes during the seventh inning; however, the first and fourth Ks were both wild pitches.
Rules state that if the catcher drops the third strike, the batter will be safe unless he is tagged out before advancing to first base.
The major league baseball record for strikeouts in an inning is four, while the 5-K inning has been done twice before in the minors.
