
Munoz, Stanford Receive Top Honors In Cleveland Farm System
Akron - 12/05/00 - Two Akron Aeros have been awarded top honors in the Cleveland Indians Minor League system for the 2000 season. First Basemen Billy Munoz was given the Lou Boudreau Award, which is awarded each year to the top position player in the farm system, while right-hander Jason Stanford was named the Bob Feller Award recipient, given annually to the top pitcher in the Tribe’s Minor League system.
Munoz, 23, hit a combined .291 (144-494) with 28 doubles,
5triples, 25 homers and 87 RBI playing for both the Aeros and Class A Kinston
of the Carolina League. He began the year with the K-Tribe, where he
hit .315 (67-213). Munoz participated in the Carolina League All-Star
game and was named MVP of that game after going 3-for-5 with 3 RBI and the
game-winning home run. Prior to the game, he also won the home-run hitting
contest. On June 23, Munoz was promoted to Akron, where he hit .274
(77-281).
Stanford, 21, was a combined 12-7 with a 2.62 ERA in 26 starts with Class A Columbus (South Atlantic League), Kinston and Akron. He led all Tribe farm hands in wins (12), was 2nd in strikeouts (135) and tied for 2nd in innings pitched (154.2). Stanford was also named to the South Atlantic League All-Star team. Jason was promoted to Akron on August 31 to take LHP C.C. Sabathia's spot in the Aeros rotation and pitched strongly in the his lone Double A appearance in a must-win game for the Aeros on September 3 in Altoona (5.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R/ER, 1 BB, 5 SO).
