Slumbering Lumber
Three Aeros Pitchers combine to put the Senators sticks to bed.
-04.08.03 - Perhaps
the early start was the reason the Senators defense seemed a little
sleepy.
In a game scheduled
for a 10:35am start, Harrisburg committed six errors, while giving up
15 runs on 18 hits to Akron.
Unfortunately for
the Senators, their bats never woke up.
Akron Aeros right-handers
Fernando Cabrera, Aaron Myette and Jose Vargas combined to no-hit the
Senators on April 8 before a matinee crowd of 4,852 at Canal Park in
Akron.
It was the first
no-hitter in the history of the franchise, which dates to 1989.
Cabrera, 21, one
of the Cleveland Indians' top pitching prospects, struck out nine in
five innings of his first start of the season.
Myette, on assignment
from the Indians, and Vargas each pitched two innings and struck out
two.
The Akron trio's
outing did not go untarnished. The Senators drew seven walks, split
between Talmadge Nunnari and Josh McKinley.
The no-hitter was
the most-lopsided of the 137 thrown in the EL since the Class AA league
started in 1923 and the earliest thrown in the league's 81 seasons.
Not once did the
Senators threaten the no-hitter, barely touching the ball, while striking
out 13 times.
Left fielder Grady
Sizemore provided more than enough offense for the Aeros, collecting
5 hits with four runs scored.
