Young, 20, was the Devil Rays' first-round pick as well as the first overall pick in the 2003 June draft. According to an Associated Press report, he signed a five-year contract with the D-Rays estimated to be worth $5.8 million.

Agitation with officiating has been growing with the replacement umpires that have been working minor league games this season because the regular umpires have been on strike.

Ironically, Mobley was in Cincinnati today for negotiations involving the strike.

Minor League Baseball has ruled that names of the replacement umpires not be released to the media or the public.

"It's an unfortunate incident and there should be no place for actions like that in the game of baseball," the umpire said in a statement given to Pawtucket assistant general manager Daryl Jasper. "Any official should not be treated like that. (Young) embarrassed himself and his teammates."

Young left the stadium after being ejected and did not report for Thursday's game. A Durham official said Young will not accompany the team to Syracuse where the Bulls begin a series on Saturday. The Bulls parent club, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, confirmed for MLN late this afternoon that Young would return to Durham to await the decision of Mobley and the International League.

Pending the outcome, he will return to Tampa to meet with the D-Rays. If his suspension is long, he may return to his home in Camarillo, California, a small military and farming community just North of Los Angeles County, California.

Young released a statement this afternoon through his agent Arn Tellem.

"I sincerely regret my actions in the game (Wednesday)," said Young in the written apology. "Regrettably, in the heat of competition my emotions got the better of me.
