8.27.02 - The Mexican League Baseball Final is underway. The Mexico City Diablos are representing the Northern Division.
The Diablos burned off
two straight home victories against the Tecolotes of Laredo to advance to
the championship round.
The Diablos were down
3-2 in the series. In game seven Mexico City was trailing Laredo 4-0. The
team rallied in the seventh and eighth innings, pushing four runs across in
each frame.
Mexico City went on to
the victory 8-4. Mexico Citys Jose Louis Sandoval stood out with 3-RBIs
in the contest.
Over in the Southern Division
the Mexico Tigres are still alive. The club did their best impression of the
road warrior.
The Tigres were behind
the eight-ball down 3-2 to the Oaxaca Guerreros in their semi-final round.
To reach the finals the Tigres would have to notch two victories in the Guerreros
casa.
The outfit did just that.
The Tigres won game-six 4-2. In the seventh and deciding game the team manufactured
a 5-3 victory.
Mattias Carrillo came
up big for the Mexico. Carrillo drove in three runs in the two games. A double
and a solo shot did the job for Carrillo and the Tigres.
On the mound the team
used a platoon of pitchers to discard the Guerreros. Six Tigres gave up five
runs in the two games. That was enough juice to send the Mexico Tigres to
the Finals.
The Mexican League Finals
now stand tied at 1-1. In game one, Tigre hurler Jose Navarro went 4-2/3 innings.
He showed no mercy to the best team in the regular season of the Mexican League.
More fuel was added to
the fire with the Tigres bats. Their sticks were as hot as the salsa
at the concession stand. The club racked up 21-hits to win game-one with ease
15-5.
In game two the Diablos
came back and showed why they had the best regular season record in the Mexican
League. Tavo Alvarez pitched 7-1/3 innings and struck-out 5 Tigres. The Diablos
went on to double up their opponent 6-3 for the win.
In game three [Tuesday-8.27.02] the Tigres will send their best pitcher to the rubber.
Right-Hander Jesus Olague
will tow the line. The Diablos will send Left-Hander Ed Vosberg to face the
Mexico Tigre line-up.
The Mexican League champion will be decided by the end of the week. [9.01.02]
