PCL team keeps familiar face in familiar place.
11.08.02 - The Albuquerque Isotopes have named Dean Treanor as their skipper for the teams inaugural season. Treanor, 54, spent the 2002 season as manager of the Calgary Cannons, the club that has relocated to Albuquerque to begin play in April 2003.
The San Luis Obispo, CA, resident led the Cannons to a 67-71 record and a
third place finish in the Pacific Coast Leagues Northern Division. The
2002 season marked Treanors first campaign in the Florida Marlins system.
Prior to joining the Marlins, Treanor spent three years in the Los Angeles
Dodgers system. He served as the pitching coach of the Albuquerque Dukes
in 1999 and 2000, before the franchise was sold and moved to Portland, Ore.
Treanor was with the Montreal Expos organization as pitching coach at AA-Harrisburg
(1996-97) and AAA-Ottawa (1998). He has also worked for the San Diego Padres
(1992-95) and the Cleveland Indians (1988-90).
Dean was signed as a pitcher by the Cincinnati Reds organization in 1971.
He rose to the Double-A level before an injured shoulder forced him to quit
playing.
Bryan Treanor, Deans son, is a pitcher in the Florida Marlins organization.
The 22-year old pitched in the Gulf Coast League last year, and earned a promotion
to A ball.
Joining Treanor in the Isotopes dugout will be hitting coach Matt Stark, pitching
coach Gary Buckels, and trainer Sean Bearer.
Stark, 37, spent the 2002 season as Calgarys hitting coach. He was drafted
by Toronto in 1983 and played in the Major Leagues with the Blue Jays (1987)
and White Sox (1990). A resident of Mesa, AZ, Stark was a star for 10 years
in the Mexican League (1992-2001) where, in 1993, he became the first player
in league history to reach triple figures in runs scored, RBI, and walks.
Buckels, 37, joins the Florida Marlins organization after spending the last
seven years as a Single-A pitching coach in the St. Louis system. His playing
career spanned eight seasons, beginning in the California Angels system in
1987. He pitched in 10 games for the Cardinals in 1994, going 0-1 with a 2.25
ERA.
Bearer, 32, begins his second season as the Marlins Triple-A trainer,
having served in that same capacity in Calgary in 2002. He had spent the previous
six years with Montreal, including three (1999-2001) at AAA-Ottawa.
