- 04.11.02 - BALTIMORE,MDThe Aberdeen franchise, a Baltimore Orioles affiliate, announced today that they will be known as the IronBirds.
Former Baltimore Orioles great Cal Ripken, Jr. bought the NY-Penn League franchise, which played last year in Utica, NY, and moved it to Aberdeen, Maryland.
Ripken made the announcement today in the DH Lounge in the Camden Yards Warehouse.
We think that the name really maintains and enhances the tie between myself and the Orioles, said Cal Ripken, Jr.
We looked at several names and received many great suggestions from the fans. We thought that IronBirds was the best of all the great ideas and the logo created by Planit Advertising is unique and fun, Ripken added.
The IronBirds will christen Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen on June 18 when they host Williamsport. The NY-Penn League is a 14-team, Class-A Short-Season League, with clubs in Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Vermont.
