Smithsonian To Recognize Minor League Baseball Centennial
Panel discussion to include Crash Davis; St. Petersburg, Florida is the ironic host.
ST. PETERSBURG, FL - 06/13/01 - The Smithsonian Institution will recognize the centennial of Minor League Baseball with a panel discussion on Thursday, July 19 at the Baird Auditorium. Crash Davis, whose career was portrayed in the notable baseball movie, Bull Durham, will be featured on the panel.
The Smithsonian's choice of St. Petersburg is ironic as the city is home to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, a team which imposes a near news blackout on minor league activities of the teams from the Florida State League surrounding it.
Minor League Baseball was organized in 1901 as the National Association of Professional Baseball LeaguesStan Brand, a current Vice President of Minor League Baseball, will lead a panel discussion about Minor League Baseball and the "hold" that it has had on Americans for 100 years.
Sharing their reminiscences with Brand will be several former Minor League players, including Rick Wolff, Pat Jordan and George Gmelch.
