3. Legends Field The best (and most intentionally) kept secret in baseball is Legends Field. From Monument Park at the entrance with the memorials to Ruth, Gehrig, Maris, et al. to the sweeping concourses and lagoon near the practice fields, this is a world-class facility stinking with history. The reason of course is that this is more than the Single-A home of the Tampa Yankees. It is also the spring H.Q. of the Boyz of the Bronx. Too close to the Trop and the dismal D-Rays, and a certain owner too happy with the facility to move, they have to keep a low profile. What makes the place, however, are the small, but fiercely loyal cadre of expatriate New Yawkahs that love their T-Yanks. Best G-rated tailgate parties in the minors. Food could use a little work by modern standards, but is more than adequate for the baseball purist as the hot dogs rock (Would you expect less from a baseball team affiliated with the Big Apple's Bombers?) The gift shop is strictly major league rip-off. The most expensive merchandise in the minors. Shame on you, George, for gouging your 180 loyal T-Yank fans. |
