2003 Pacific Coast League (PCL) Player of the Year

Bobby Crosby With Miguel Tejada seemingly awaiting a free-agency windfall, Bobby Crosby has emerged in his second full professional season as the heir-apparent to the Oakland Athletics’ shortstop position.
In his first year in Triple-A, Crosby’s bat and defensive skills earned him the PCL’s Rookie of the Year Award [See MLN article Crosby Crowned], while helping the Sacramento River Cats to a league and franchise best 92 regular season wins and a 2003 PCL Championship.

In 2003, Bobby hit .308 with 22 homers, while his 90 RBIs, 86 runs, 60 extra base hits and .544 slugging percentage ranked among the top five in the league.

Crosby, 23, spent the 2002 season between Single-A Modesto and Double-A Midland where he batted a combined .295 in 132 games, with nine home runs, 69 RBI and 52 walks for a .367 on-base percentage.

Named the Big West Conference Player of the Year in 2001, the 6'3", 195-pounder was picked by Oakland in the first round of the 2001 June draft.

Crosby has baseball in his blood, literally. His father Ed Crosby is former A's scout and former major leaguer.

Unless he has a horrible, fall, or spring, or Tejada's agent gets the big contract out of the most tight-fisted organization in baseball, we expect to see Crosby in an A's uniform in 2004.

AAA International League Player of the Year 2003

Fernando Seguignol

Columbus Clippers’ Fernando Seguignol (SAY-ge-NAWL) had a phenomenal season.

The Panamanian native was only 5 RBIs short of becoming the first player to win the league's triple crown since Jim Rice 29 years ago.
Fernando led the league in hitting (.341), slugging (.624), home runs (28), and was second in RBIs (87) and on base percentage (.401) despite missing five weeks of the season (including all of May) with a quadriceps injury.
Seguignol 's batting average was the highest in Clippers' history.

He is the first Clipper to clear the .600 plateau in slugging percentage.

The 6'5", 230-pound slugger signed with the Yankees as a free agent after spending the 2002 season playing in Japan.

Seguignol has been around the block a few times. His age (28) and time in the minors and Japan might make his value as a major leaguer a bit questionable to the superstar-laden Yankees, the Clippers' parent club. This best season may be an anomaly. We like to think that Seguignol has had a break-out year. If he is a commodity of value to the Yanks, it is more likely as trade bait. For a skipper who wants the seasoning of a veteran in their rookies, Seguignol could have a few stand-out years in an organization needing a good fielder and a reliable bat. His achievements also earned him the 2003 International League POY.
