Delmon Young Rickie Weeks

Delmon Young is currently playing for the Charleston RiverDogs of the class Low-A South Atlantic League.

In 60 games this season Young is batting .296, with 8 home runs and 37 RBI.

The 18-year-old is slugging at a .474 clip, while his on-base percentage is .328.

After becoming their #1 pick, Delmon did not sign with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays early enough to play in the 2003 regular season. He did perform well at the Arizona Fall League though, hitting .417 in 15 games.

The former California prep player of the year has plenty of raw power and has shown the ability to hit for average. He’s also an asset in the field and already possesses a major league arm.

A move to Double or Triple-A later this season should be expected. A late season call up to Tampa may be in the cards if he performs at the higher levels.

As a two-time NCAA batting champion, Rickie Weeks is a little more polished hitter of the two at this point. Rickie led the country in hitting during the 2002 (.495) and 2003 (.479) collegiate seasons, earning the Golden Spikes Award as the College Player of the Year in ’03.

Weeks played well enough during his pro debut in the Midwest League that the Milwaukee Brewers felt he deserved a seven-game September stint in the majors.

The Brewers placed Weeks in Double-A with the Huntsville Stars to start the ’04 season after a good showing in the Arizona Fall League.

Though he played well the first month of the season, Weeks has been in somewhat of a slump lately, batting .244 in 217 plate appearances.

Rickie has been hit by 18 pitches in 62 games, and this could be affecting his swing. Getting plunked that many times will deter almost any batter’s aggressiveness in the box.

Still, his skills cannot be ignored. Weeks has tremendous bat speed that can generate some power and his quickness on the field is something that cannot be taught.

With his will to succeed, look for Rickie to once again find his swing in the Southern League and get back on the fast track to Milwaukee.
