So far, the higher class of pitching has been able to lower Jason’s batting average. The Red Wings have had to manage with Kubel hitting ‘only’ .366 through 23 International League [IL] games.
Rochester skipper Phil Roof for one, is pleased as punch with what Kubel brings to the table.
“Jason’s got a live bat, quick hands, and strong wrists,” says Roof. “This young man can pull anybody, he can hit the ball the other way and he’s a patient hitter that doesn’t strike out much.
In 2003, Kubel was a Florida State League All-Star, tying for second in league in RBI and ranking fourth in batting. He also led all minor leaguers in sacrifice flies.
Roof liked what he saw in Kubel and was sure he would be able to hold his own against the IL pitching.
“We were trying to convince the front office out of spring training to let him start the year at Triple-A, because I liked his swing last year, and I thought he was ready to make the jump,” says Roof. “He hasn’t connect with long ball yet at this level, but believe me, it will come.”
Still, the timetable for Kubel’s arrival in Minnesota may not come until next year.
“They’re not going to rush him,” says Roof. “He’s a young kid that just needs to play everyday and gain the knowledge that comes with that.”
Despite an apparent outfielder logjam in Minnesota, Roof believes Kubel will have no problem cracking the lineup.
“They’ll find a spot out there in that outfield some time next year, believe me. He’s an ideal athlete and left handed to hit off that baggie in left field,” says Roof, referring to the infamous Metrodome decor. “He can play right field with a very strong, accurate arm.”
“Guys that play like he’s been playing force their way on to the club,” Minnesota Twins Director of Player Operations, Rob Antony tells MLN. “He might have to be a little bit patient, but we’re going to find a spot for him”
As far as his future in the bigs, Phil Roof did offer the following prediction:
“He may wind up being one of the best hitters in the major leagues once he gets two or three years under his belt up there.”
We've found a spot for him, at number two in the FAB50.
UPDATE: Jason Kubel has been named the MLN Player of the Year for 2004 (Baseball)
