“I’ve never seen a ball come off the bat the way it does with his,” says Bill Geivett, the Rockies Director of Player Personnel, who has seen a lot of power hitters. “Ryan has tremendous power and at 6-5, 230, he can absolutely crush. I would definitely keep an eye on him.”
A second-year pro out of the University of Florida, Shealy hit .379 with 23 HR and 73 RBI while posting a .713 slugging percentage in his senior season with the Gators.
Like many long ball hitters, one of the goals is to make him better at hitting for average as well as power. In 2004, Ryan is showing the ability to do just that, batting .305, in addition to his 10 home runs to date. Shealy also has 37 RBI and 15 doubles in 66 games with the Tulsa Drillers this season.
The effort should be enough to earn him a move up to AAA Colorado Springs, if not during this season, then in 2004. If the Rockies go shopping for a big free agent, Shealy will be on some scout's wish list. Otherwise we'd expect to see him in Rockies pinstripes in 2006 or sooner.
