That handle might fit Mr. Jimenez quite well. Developing his career in the shadows of the missile test ranges around the California League, Ubaldo throws rocket-like heat in the high 90s. At a time when inflation hits ERAs about as hard as it stomps on wallets and grade point averages, anyone who can bring in da heat like Jimenez is worthy of a farm system's time and efforts.
Considered a Rockies’ top prospect, Jimenez has played well this year with a 4-1 record in the California league as of publication.
Like many rockets, Ubaldo has had a long, slow trip out to the launchpad. His gyroscopes still need a little fine tuning to get some consistency in his pitching.
It seems, though, that he has finally got some command and control of his high 90 mph stuff. He put together a very strong second half in 2003. That performance landed him in California League this season. At 19, he has time on his side in his development, and a talented staff that has broken in many a wild high-heat pitcher in their day.
Ubaldo has posted a 2.23 ERA in his last 8 games for the Visalia Oaks and should move up at least one level this summer. If the Rockies pitching staff can keep him in the groove, we guarantee one thing: When he makes his higher level debuts in 2005 and 2006, it will be the pitching that everyone is talking about.
