A promising pitcher with a sizzling fastball, Capellan has struck out 89 batters in 62.2 innings in at Class A Myrtle Beach earlier this season.
He racked up a 5-1 record with a 1.94 ERA, and a Carolina League leading 62 strikeouts. He was called up to Double-A Greenville on May 28.
There Capellan is on a career plateau, with a 1-1 with a 3.31 ERA with the G-Braves. He still shows batters that hell hath no fury like a hurler making up time in his career: He has racked up 27 strikeouts to only 3 walks with the G-Braves so far this season.
Jose seems to have fully recovered from the Tommy John surgery he had a few years back. At 23, the clock radio that was playing "Time is On My Side" when he started his pro run at 18 is now ticking against him, with crops of 19 and 20 year old hotshots trying to push on past.
We like Jose because he has a lot of heart, and a developing maturity that is improving his performance on the mound.
He is not on the fast track, but he's on the right road towards a shot at higher level ball.
Promise is just that, though. Capellan will have to dominate at the AA level the way that he did at Myrtle Beach to advance to AAA or have a shot at the bigs. This is a career of stops and starts, so do not be surprised if he spends a bit more time at the AAA if and when he makes it there.
At best we see him making the Braves' bullpen by 2007. Of course, we would love this to be the catalyst that gets him mad enough to make it to the starting "ro" at the house that Ted built. Today he comes in at no. 34 on the 2004 MLN FAB50 survey.
