Despite his great speed and defensive skills, Taveras was left unprotected in the 2003 Rule 5 Draft by the Cleveland Indians, who couldn’t fit him on their 40-man roster.
The Houston Astros subsequently picked up Willy in that draft and he is currently having a great year for the organization playing in the Texas League.
As of 6/19, Taveras leads the league with a .356 batting average and 29 stolen bases for the Double-A Round Rock Express.
With the Astros’ need to get younger in the outfield, Tavares has a good shot of making the Houston lineup.
