Mike started his first full season last year in the Pioneer League, where he K.O.'d ninety-nine hitters, while giving up a thrifty 24 walks.
After that performance, the Dodgers hope that they can turn the Mighty M. into one of their power pitchers of the future.
Megrew ankled the Pioneers and headed for the Florida State League (Class A) in 2004. At historic Vero Beach, Mike is 4-1 thus far, posting a 2.20 ERA with a 60-23 strikeout to walk ratio in 49 innings pitched.
He is on the slow train coming through Vero. We don't expect to see him in AA before 2005 unless the big Dodgers start chewing up pitchers, and everyone in the system gets hurried along a bit.
The prospects of the Mighty M. are still part of the politics of the Dodger farm in the post-O'Malley world: The system that produced epic pitching still does, but the Dodgers don't always take advantage of the talent grown there. Their taste in the corporate Fox and Fox shadow government area is for the Deal-A-Heel system that brings free agents like Kevin Brown to the mound at Chavez for guest appearances between bouts on the IR (That's our version of fair and balanced.)
Still, should someone in the Dodgers organization wake up and remember that they used to win championships with epic teams built on the farm, and shun being the R&R club for big-ticket F.A.s awaiting a ride on a real championship club, Megrew may be ready for a shot at the pennant team of 2007.
