Called UpMLN Fab50 No. 4 David Wright Photo

Name: David Wright

Height: 6’0”

Weight: 200 lbs.

Position: Third Base [3B]

Bats/Throws: R/R

DOB: 12/20/1982

Organization: New York Mets

Acquired: Selected by Mets in 2001 draft [1st round]

Current Team: Norfolk Tides (AAA)

David Wright signed with the New York Mets as the 38th overall pick in 2001 and has progressed rapidly, making both his Double-A and Triple-A debuts this season.

At the time of his June 13 promotion, Wright ranked in the Eastern League’s top 10 in practically every single offensive category.

The 21-year-old was hitting .363 with 10 HR and 40 RBI for Binghamton, while leading the league in on base (.467) and slugging percentage (.619).

“He has all the ability in the world,” says Binghamton Mets General Manager Bill Terlecky “He hits for average and he hits for power.”

Terlecky also noted that Wright hit the two longest home runs he had ever seen at Binghamton Memorial Stadium, including a mammoth shot that sailed over the park’s scoreboard.

Complimenting the pop in his bat is a good knowledge of strike zone and the patience to wait for a good pitch. He also has shown some swiftness on the base paths by swiping 20 bags in Binghamton.

Wright’s recent promotion was a dream come true for the Norfolk native. Playing for the hometown team he rooted for as a kid, David promptly went 3-for-4 in his Tides debut.

Last season, Wright was a Florida State League [FSL] All-Star, leading the league in extra-base hits and walks. He finished in the top five of the FSL in a total of eight offensive categories.

David then went on to finish ninth in the prestigious Arizona Fall League with a .341 average.

Wright is described as being great in the field with a strong, accurate arm and major league range.

Adding David Wright to a club that already includes a developing Jose Reyes and Japanese-import Kazuo Matsui may mean that the Mets will get a championship infield and that their vocal fans finally have something to cheer rather than jeer about.

He debuts at number four (4) in the FAB50.
