Independent baseball continues to improve. Newer parks, deals with foreign major leagues, and more minor league (and major league) players temporarily parking careers outside of the farm system have lead to some interesting times for the non-affiliated (with Major League Baseball) leagues of baseball.

Brandon Wood Pitcher [P]
Fort Worth Cats


Sporting a 7-1 record with a slim 2.25 ERA earns Fort Worth’s Brandon Wood a spot on our list. In 52 innings pitched, Wood has allowed 38 hits and 16 walks while striking out 48 Central League hitters.

Thad Markray Pitcher [P]
Shreveport Sports


Thad Markray’s huge 82 strikeouts ranks second in the Central League, while his 8-1 record ties for most wins. Markray has also posted a 2.93 ERA and has surrendered just 24 walks and 67 hits in 76.2 innings pitched.

Ryan Harris Pitcher [P]
Edinburg Roadrunners


Edinburg’s Ryan Harris has been the Roadrunners go-to guy, posting an 8-1 record this season with a 3.72 ERA. Harris has struck out 53 batters while yielding only 31 walks and 58 hits in 67.2 innings pitched.

Ryan Webb Outfield [O]
Edinburg Roadrunners


Ryan Webb is a stats machine, leading the Central League in hitting [.360], hits [81] runs scored [56], and extra-base hits [26]. In addition, Webb’s .583 slugging percentage and 23 stolen bases both rank third in the league.

Juan Rocha

Outfield [O]
San Angelo Colts


A diamond in the rough, Juan Rocha’s 12 long balls ties for tops in the Central League. Rocha is hitting a very respectable .325 with 67 hits and 48 RBI in 54 games with the Colts.

Anthony Angel

Second Base [2B]
Edinburg Roadrunners


Anthony Angel is the third member of the Edinburg Roadrunners to make the Central League list, which is not surprising considering the team’s early dominance in 2004. During 52 games this season, Angel is hitting .338 with 43 runs scored, 42 runs batted in, 15 doubles and 67 hits.

Northeast League

Jeremy Sugarman

Pitcher [P]
North Shore Spirit


Jeremy Sugarman leads the Northeast League with an undefeated 7-0 record this season. He has given up 47 hits in 49 innings pitched and has a 33-13 strikeout to walk ratio. Jeremy’s 2.57 ERA also ranks in the circuit’s top five.

Brian Buchanan

Pitcher [P]
Brockton Rox


Brian Buchanan is right behind Sugarman on the Northeast League’s leader board with a 6-0 record. He has posted a 2.27 ERA and has 29 strikeouts, while yielding only 15 walks and 23 hits in 43.2 innings pitched this season.

John Kelly

Pitcher [P]
North Shore Spirit


This season John Kelly has already mowed down 67 batters, leading the Northeast League by almost 20 strikeouts. Kelly is proving to be a workhorse, posting a 5-2 record with a 3.54 ERA in 48.1 innings pitched, and has thrown three complete game shutouts.

Tony Runion

Brockton Rox


In Brockton, you spell relief R-U-N-I-O-N.  In fact, Tony Runion has racked up 11 saves for the Rox, pacing the circuit’s relievers. Runion has also been stingy, holding opposing batters to a measly .184 average while striking out 20 Northeast League hitters.

Vic Davilla

First Base [1B]
North Shore Spirit


Vic Davilla has been tearing up the Northeast League for the past few years, and continues to do so this season. In 36 games for the North Shore Spirit, Davilla is batting .351, with 10 HR, 29 RBI, and 46 hits, while scoring 27 runs.

Wilton Veras

Third Base [3B]
New Jersey Jackals


Wilton Veras has been among the league leaders in hitting for most of the season with a .370 batting average after 29 games this year. He has also drove home 19 runs on top of his 44 hits.

Kevin Henthorne

Pitcher [P]
Bridgeport Bluefish


Kevin Henthorne is undefeated this season, posting a 6-0 record and a 3.06 ERA for Bridgeport. In 82 innings of work, Henthorne has struck out 58 Atlantic League batters while giving up only 11 walks.

Tim Cain

Bridgeport Bluefish


Tim Cain has a 7-2 record along with a 2.94 ERA for Bridgeport this season. Cain can find the zone and has a great 44-13 strikeout to walk ratio, while giving up 57 hits in 67 innings pitched.

Bill Pulisipher

Long Island Ducks


Long Island’s Bill Pulisipher is tied for the league lead in wins with a 7-2 record. He also ranks fourth in the Atlantic League with 54 strikeouts and has a 3.21 ERA in 73 innings pitched for the Ducks.

Jose Amado

Third Base [3B]
Bridgeport Bluefish


Bridgeport’s Jose Amado is second in the Atlantic League with a huge .374 batting average. In 51 games, Amado also has 4 home runs, 37 RBI, and 32 runs scored to compliment his 71 hits.

Jeff Nettles

Third Base [3B]
Somerset Patriots


Jeff Nettles, son of former Major League All-Star Craig Nettles, may turn a few heads who understimated him in affiliated baseball with a stellar 2004 season. Jeff is currently batting .365 with 11 HR, 41 RBI, 76 hits and 40 runs scored for the Somerset Patriots.

Pat Lennon

Inf./DH
Long Island Ducks


Playing for Long Island, Pat Lennon is perched among the league leaders in many offensive categories this season. He ranks second in: RBI [51], doubles [18] and hits [81]; ranks third in runs scored [45] and extra base hits [28]; while ranking fourth in batting average [.368] and on-base percentage [.440].

Mike Peschel
Pitcher [P]
Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks


Lefty Mike Peschel is having a wonderful 2004 season for the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. He is unbeaten at 5-0, with a miniscule league leading 1.84 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 44 innings pitched.

Anthony Boughner

Schaumburg Flyers


At six wins and one loss, Schaumburg’s Anthony Boughner paces the circuit in victories, while his 1.90 ERA ranks second. He has only surrendered 6 walks while whiffing 49 Northern League batters.

Brian Mazone
Pitcher [P]
Joliet Jackhammers


Brian Mazone is having a solid 2004 season for the Joliet Jackhammers, posting a 5-2 record to accompany a 2.24 ERA. Mazone has great control and leads the league with 64 strikeouts with just 12 walks.

Kelley Gulledge Catcher [C]
Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks


Catcher Kelley Gulledge was drafted by the Minnesota Twins, but became expendable when the Joe Mauer Express caught steam. This year, Gulledge has parked himself with the RedHawks, where he is batting .365 with 20 runs batted in, 31 runs scored and a .445 on base percentage in 42 games.

Tonaye Brown

St. Paul Saints


St. Paul’s Tonaye Brown is tops in the Northern League with 67 hits, while his 376 batting average ranks third in the circuit. Brown has also shown some power, hitting 7 HR and 36 RBI in 42 games for the Saints.

Eddie Pearson
Inf./DH
Kansas City T-Bones


Kansas City’s Eddie Pearson is batting at a .373 clip with 60 hits and 28 runs scored in 42 games. Pearson also has 10 home runs, while his .627 slugging percentage and 43 RBI both rank second in the Northern League.

Joe Dooley
Pitcher [P]
Gateway Grizzlies

Leading all Frontier League hurlers with 7 wins and a slim 1.46 ERA is Gateway’s Joe Dooley. In 68 innings pitched, Dooley has given up 57 hits and 19 walks, while striking out 52. He has yet to lose a decision in 2004 for the Grizzlies.

Grant Williams

Evansville Otters

Evansville’s Grant Williams is undefeated on the mound in 2004, sporting a 6-0 record alongside a 1.99 ERA. He has a great 66-18 strikeout to walk ratio, and has yielded just 39 hits in 63 innings pitched. Williams also has thrown 3 complete game shutouts this season

Justin Dowdy

Rockford Riverhawks

Justin Dowdy is 4-1 this season, posting a 2.47 ERA for the Rockford RiverHawks. Dowdy has struck out 52 hitters in 51 innings, while surrendering just 16 walks and 35 hits. So far this season, Justin is holding the Frontier League opposition to a paltry .187 batting average. 

Cole Hilt

Evansville Otters

Cole Hilt’s .362 batting average is currently the third highest in the Frontier League this season. Showing some power as well, Hilt has smacked 7HR, 36 RBI in 44 games and his 17 doubles lead the league. Cole is slugging at a .612 clip with a .468 on-base percentage.

J.D. Foust

Florence Freedom

J.D. Foust is having a great 2004 campaign, hitting .331 in 38 games for the Florence Freedom. In addition, Foust has hit 4 HR, 19 RBI, and 9 two-baggers, while swiping 13 bases this season.

Brian Stoeckelin
Pitcher [P]
Washington Wild Things

The Wild Things' Brian Stoeckelin is another player that will make your heart sing in 2004. Stoeckelin has a solid .327 batting average, with a slugging percentage of .456 and an on-base percentage of .393. He also has 10 doubles, 3 triples, 17 RBI and 48 hits in 37 games for the Wild Things.
