Brad Thompson made national headlines earlier this season after breaking the Southern League [SL] record with his 57.1 consecutive scoreless innings streak [see MLN Story…].

The amazing start to this season comes after Thompson made a solid pro debut last year in the St. Louis Cardinals farm system.

His stock began to rise after a strong showing in the Arizona Fall League, where he posted a 1.59 ERA in nine appearances.

This season, Thompson was leading the SL with a 7-1 record and a 1.76 ERA for the Tennessee Smokies when he received a promotion to Triple-A on June 13.

“Obviously with the way he pitched, he didn’t belong in the Southern League for very long,” said Tennessee Smokies GM Brian Cox.

What really makes Thompson special isn’t just the numbers, but the fact that he has already shown that he can handle major league-style pressure.

As a result of his scoring streak, Brad received the national media attention normally reserved for big leaguers and he proved he was still able to perform despite the distractions.

“The kid handled himself amazingly well for a 22-year old,” said Cox. “He got so much publicity over the course of the streak, and it grew and grew. For him to handle that, and go out to pitch the way he did, that’s a real testament to him.”

Although he recently missed some time with some shoulder soreness, Brad looked good in his Triple-A debut, giving up one run and striking out four in a win for the Memphis Redbirds.
