Clint Barmes has been one of the most dominating players in the Pacific Coast League this season. As of June 16, he leads the league in hits with 88, and also ranks in the top five in with 21 doubles, 137 total bases, and 51 runs.

A 10th round pick in 2000, the 25-year-old has steadily progressed the Colorado Rockies system and is enjoying his breakout year after four seasons with the organization.

He was recently named to the 2003 Pacific Coast League (PCL) All-Star team.

“Clint is demonstrating lots of positive things down in Colorado Springs,” Rockies’ Director of Player Personnel, Bill Geivett tells MLN. “He can really hit and he’s going to steal some bases.”

In addition to his league leading totals, Barmes is hitting .344 with 9 homers and 11 swipes for the Sky Sox.

Last season, Barmes honed his game at Triple-A andgot his first taste of the majors, hitting .320 [8-25] in a 12 game stint with the Rockies.

Though Clint has already moved from centerfield to second base in this career, it seems like he’s finally found a home at short. In fact, Barmes is reminding Colorado’s front office of a former great Rockies shortstop.

“People have made a comparison to Walt Weiss and I think that’s a fair comparison,” says Geivett. “He’s a complete player in the sense that he brings the intangibles, such as his ability to adapt and make adjustments to his swing. His aptitude for learning is at an advanced level and that’s going to really help him as he moves along in his career.”

While his numbers have done enough talking for him, Barmes is sitting behind Royce Clayton, “who is playing well at the big league level” according to Geivett.

Should Barmes continue his assault on PCL pitching though, the Rockies would be hard pressed to keep him out of the big leagues.
