There are a few genuine shrines of baseball. The Dodgers, whose farm system has generated many of the great names in baseball, including many who never played for the major league club (Remember Pedro Martinez?), have passed through the facility at Vero Beach and Holman Field for 56 years.
When the big leaguers head north to start the season Holman is home to both Florida State League Dodgers and the Gulf Coast League Dodgers. The FSL is a Class A league; the GCL is Rookie. How do you bring fan excitement to Vero Beach?
“We like to emphasize a lot of the same things as are here during spring training,” commented team GM Trevor Gooby. “Holman Stadium has the same wonderful elements, such as the open dugouts where fans can talk with the players, being able to sit on the outfield berms and the lack of signage on the fences. In addition, our ticket prices are really reasonable.”
FSL tickets are inexpensive. The GCL games are free.
Holman is the centerpiece of Dodgertown, the beautiful complex with practice fields, villas, ponds and a golf course. In spring, many Dodger greats, including legends like Sandy Koufax, can be seen at Dodgertown, signing autographs and giving advice to some of the new crop of up-and-coming Dodgers.
If you're a fan of pitching, the scouts of the Dodgers organization still have a great eye for talent. The Vero Beach Dodgers often get first-looks at some of the best raw talent in the business.
Truly, it's worth a trip to Vero Beach during the spring or summer just to see this bygone-era community.
