Brian Anderson - No. 26 of Baseball's Best Minor League Players - MLN FAB50 Baseball 2005 - Charlotte Knights - Chicago White Sox - MLN Sports Zone - A Minor League News Magazine

Brian Anderson would make a great Greek sports legend even if he has more of that Viking look.

He had an epic career in Arizona. He was a two for one player who both pitched and fielded.  His pitching was not his strength though.

Anderson has an Achilles' Heel, or more correctly an Achilles wrist, that has dogged him in college and his pro career, and sets the tone of this epic tale.

The wrist bothered him enough in college that he was never a very effective pitcher. As a batter, he cleaned up in his freshman year, then slumped down to .275 on that deadly mix of injury and reaction to the injury.

He caught some wind in his sails in 2003, batting .366 with a power .668 slugging percentage.

2004 FAB50 Ranking: Ones 2 Watch 2004

The White Sox took him as a first round pick (15th OA) in the 2003 draft. He got off to a good start in Great Falls in the Rookie Pioneer League in 2003, batting .388/.592 before the wrist sent our hero's career drifting once again towards the rocky shore.  He added another insult to the injury list with a back pull in the Arizona Fall League, putting him on the physically fussy list with many scouts and touts.

This year Anderson has batted .295/.470 (AVG/SLG) with 15 dingers and 54 RBIs in the Triple-A International League for the Charlotte Knights. Certainly not slouchy numbers, but not the kind of fire breathing dragon performance that Anderson seems certainly capable of delivering.

He got a call up to Chicago on August 16 for a cup of coffee and further evaluation. It's too early to tell what that experience will yield to the overall picture though.

He made our Ones2Watch list in 2004 for being a fast track player a year or more out of the curve for the FAB50 of that season.  This year he ranks in at number 26, largely because of what we'll call the Borchard factor.

Joe Borchard was the White Sox' last great Ferrari, setting the organization back $5.5 million+.  Doing okay now, he struggled from being rushed. Chicago has been much more careful with Anderson, whose injury-prone physique might gain more down-time from performance stress.

We think that his current trip to Chicago is to see the sights, and check out the towering pitchers who will rain thunderbolts upon him when he makes the club full-time.  If he doesn't rattle or injure himself too badly, the roller coaster career may find some downhill speed into the big leagues by next season.  If not, he'll spend another year in Charlotte preparing himself for his epic adventure into the big leagues.
