Glen Perkins - No. 44 of Baseball's Best Minor League Players - MLN FAB50 Baseball 2005 - Pitcher(P)(LHP) - New Britain Rock Cats - Minnesota Twins - MLN Sports Zone - A Minor League News Magazine

Perkins was the Twins' first pick in the 2004 Draft. He went 22nd OA in the first round. He signed for a hefty $1.425 million bonus, which immediately makes him a high value player for Minnesota. So what makes Glen the million+ dollar man?

Perkins packs a three pitch mix: A 90-91 mph fast ball, a wicked breaking ball, and a change up. He's a dominant, smart pitcher who probes batters well to find weaknesses, then exploits them.

Sources in the Twins organization put him on the "fastest track" to the big leagues when we checked in earlier this year.

He began his pro career with the Twins in 2004 at Elizabethton in the Rookie Appalachian League. He had an ERA of 2.25, a 1-0 record and 22 strikeouts and only 3 earned runs on 12 innings of work.  Control was an issue of note, but he warranted a move up to Quad Cities in the Midwest league.

There he finished the season 2-1 with a 1.30 ERA, 49 strikeouts to 12 walks, and 7 earned runs two of which were dingers.

Glen began 2005 with Class A Fort Meyers in the Florida State League. He put in 55 innings of work, went 3-2, had 66 Ks to 13 walks and allowed 13 earned runs, including a pair of homers.

The Twins promoted him to New Britain in the Class AA on June 22nd. In about the same span of work (58+ innings) he's struggling a bit more, with an ERA of 5.59 and a 3-3 record on pretty evenly laid out numbers.

The scouts and touts worry about Perkins back problems as far as a career starting for the big leagues go. He is a command and control kind of guy, and a nagging back can ding his exceptional ability to place well in all four quads of the zone.

When we began evaluation we went along with the inside dope that he's on the high fast track. His numbers in Class-AA ball, though, suggest that, good intentions of the organization aside, reality may set in and he may take a slower run through the farm.

We think that Glen will get a taste of the show when his numbers perk up.  The word we've heard is starter, so we think that he's more likely to be a high number FAB50 player in 2006 and a major league candidate in 2007 for a starter's spot.  He could go bullpen, as some wags would have it, but we think not, unless he gets hurt.  Inside dope and $1.4 million bucks says that we're probably right.
