Boston Red Sox Spring Training 2006 Report
An MLN Ones2Watch 2005 selection, Craig Hansen was tapped by Boston with the 26th overall pick in last year’s draft. He was called up to the big leagues after tossing 13 scoreless innings in the minors. He pitched enough get his big-league feet wet, allowing two runs in six innings out of the bullpen.
The former St. John’s All-American and Big East Pitcher of the Year struck out 85 batters in 64 innings his senior year, and his 14 saves ranked second nationally. A lanky right-hander, Hansen has a fastball that peaks in the high 90s and complements that with a sinking fastball and hard slider.
“We’re still getting to know Craig,’’ Cherington says, “but he has the makings of a very good pitcher. His velocity is obviously good and he’s a big, strong, durable kid.’’
