Boston Red Sox Spring Training 2006 Report

Jacoby Ellsbury

The speedy outielder out of Oregon State was Boston’s top pick last year and hit .317 with 23 stolen bases in his low Class-A season.

He has drawn comparisons to Johnny Damon, mainly because he’s a lefty-hitting center fielder who can run and field. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound Ellsbury doesn’t have Damon’s power, but his pure baseball skills have him on target to reach the Red Sox no later than 2008.

“We’re still getting to know him,’’ Cherington says. “He has a simple line-drive swing and great speed. He’s also a tremendous person and a great teammate who cares about the right things. I couldn’t be more impressed.’’
