Sound Victory Over Alley Cats
One of the best clubs in the ABA by record, the Indiana Alley Cats (28-4), took on the Strong Island Sound, who took their division title with a ten-game winning streak.
Few fans made the trip from Patchogue, New York or from Anderson, Indiana, but a local weekday afternoon crowd of 29 people watched a classic comeback story.
Down 97-82 in the final minutes, Strong Island fought their way back. Gary Williams drew a foul on a 3-D possession, and delivered on three free throws. Strong Island rallied later when Williams hit another 3-D enhanced 3-pointer to tie the game in the final seconds.
The game went into double overtime when both teams could only tally five points apiece in the two minute overtime period,. In the ABA, the first team to reach 10 points in the second overtime wins the game. There are no time outs, and the clock runs until 10 are scored.
Indiana held an 8-5 lead in the second overtime, but a steal by Strong Island’s Fabion Pinnock resulted in a layup and a free throw, tying the game. Two more foul shots from Strong Island captain Gary Williams gave the Sound the victory, 128-126.
Legends Edge Nighthawks
In the second playoff game, the Southern California (SoCal) Legends beat the Maryland Knighthawks 123-120.
The Legends 7-3 center, former Los Angeles Clipper Keith Closs, recovering from a bullet wound in his right thigh, 6-3 guard Stan Fletcher, and former USC standout forward Jerry Dupree took advantage of Maryland’s top scorers.
The Nighthawks showboat Randy “White Chocolate” Gill and Ray Cunningham, struggled early with foul trouble, while Lawrence Moten, once the leading point scorer for Syracuse University, could only summon up ten points.
