Altitude Advances
The road to the 2004 NBDL postseason title will
go through Asheville.
04.17.04 -- Asheville,
NC-- The Asheville Altitude outlasted the Fayetteville Patriots 116-111 Saturday
night at the Asheville Civic Center to advance to the finals of the NBDL Postseason
Classic.
Fayetteville's
Kenny Satterfield led all scorers with 33 points, including 6-of-14 shooting
from three-point range in the loss. Brandon Kurtz paced Asheville with 24
points and eight rebounds coming off the bench.
Despite
a 22-8 spurt by the Altitude to open the second quarter, the game was a tight
struggle throughout.
The Patriots
trimmed the lead to eight points by halftime and then opened the third quarter
with an 11-0 run to take a four-point lead (68-64).
Asheville
was nursing a five-point lead early in the fourth quarter before Kareem Reid
and Kurtz took over, combining for 17 points and 9-of-13 clutch free throws
to secure the win.
"It's
great. It's what we play for all year," said Reid. "This is what
we've been working and practicing for and it's going to be exciting this week."
Fayetteville
took advantage of three-point shooting to keep the game close, sinking nine
long-distance shots while Asheville went 0-for-4.
The Patriots
couldn't overcome their own miscues though as they handed the Altitude 29
points off of 20 turnovers.
Reid
finished the game with 20 points, two assists and two steals and Desmond
Penigar tallied 16 points and five rebounds. Brandin Knight chipped in
12 points and a team-high five assists and Greg Stevenson chipped in 11 points
and nine boards.
Aside
from Satterfield, two other Patriot players scored more than 20 points as
Junie Sanders poured in 24 along with seven rebounds and five assists as Cedric
Henderson turned in 23 points and seven rebounds of his own.
The Altitude
will host the Huntsville Flight, who defeated the Charleston Lowgators, 108-100
in the NBDL Championship Game Saturday, April 24 at the Asheville Civic Center.
"We
had no preference as to which team comes in here," said Reid. "We're
happy to be playing at home."
