Second NBA Legend to be Named NBDL Head Coach
Basketball Hall of Famer and South Carolina Native Alex English Returns Home to Coach in the NBA's New Minor League.
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC, MARCH 20, 2001 - The National Basketball Deveopmental League (NBDL) has named a second Basketball Hall of Famer to coach its second of eight developing franchises.
Alex English has been named head coach of the NBDL's newest and still un-named team, located in North Charleston, South Carolina.
"This is a wonderful opportunity for me to share my knowledge of the game that I love right here in my backyard," said English. " I could not resist a chance to make a positive impact on the lives of several young men and thousands of community members."
The Denver Nuggets all-time leader in scoring (21,645) and assists (3,679), English concluded a dazzling fifteen-year career. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1997, in his first year of eligibility. The eight-time NBA All-Star was also honored for his dedication to community service throughout his career with the league's J. Walter Citizenship Award in 1988.
"On the court, Alex's record in our game is well documented," said Rob Levine, the NBA's Senior Vice President for New League Development. "However, it's his history of accomplishments and contributions as a citizen of South Carolina that makes him so uniquely qualified for this leadership position."
A native of Columbia, South Carolina, English attended Dreher High School before enrolling at the University of South Carolina. After a four-year collegiate career where he averaged 17.8 points per game and 9.6 rebounds per game, English earned his undergraduate degree in interdisciplinary Studies and was selected in the second round (23rd overall) by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1976 NBA Draft.
English went on to average 21.5 ppg on .507 shooting along with 5.5 rpg and 3.6 apg over 15 seasons with four teams (Milwaukee 1976-77 - 1977-78; Indiana 1978-79- 1979-80; Denver 1979-80- 1989-90; Dallas 1990-91).
English helped guide the Denver Nuggets to nine straight playoff appearances from 198182 to 1989-90 including a berth in the Western Conference Finals in 1984-85 and finished with a career playoff scoring average of 24.4 ppg in 10 appearances (also 1977-78 with Milwaukee.)
After retiring from the NBA in 1991, English played one season overseas with Delp Napoli in the Italian League scoring 13.9 ppg. After his playing days, English was appointed Director of Player Programs for the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) and later served as interim Executive Director of the NBPA.
In 1996, English moved on to pursue his personal interest in sports marketing as cofounder of Flick2 Ltd., a company that represents current and retired professional basketball players for contract negotiations and marketing opportunities.
Most recently, English served as a basketball analyst for Fox Sports, CNNSI's This Week in the NBA and NBA.comTV, the league's 24-hour television network. English also owns a local Wendy's franchise in Columbia, South Carolina.
Currently, English serves on the Board of Directors at the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and Boys Harbor Youth Group, and is a Board of Trustees Governor's Appointee at the University of South Carolina.
