Making Creatives Happy - Digital 101 for Printheads

You know picas, column inches. What the heck is a pixel?

A pixel Pixel is a point of light on the screen. Put a whole bunch together straight, and you have a line. We measure ads in pixels, not picas or inches. If you judge everything by King George's foot, there are 72 pixels to the inch. Live it up! Divide by 72. Too confusing? See Layout, below, for sample column and display ads.

Layout

Layout for a digital ad on MLN publications is easy.

Box

It's all about boxes. We can build any size box that you want, up to particular maximums determined by the publication. See the rate tables for maximum heights and widths.

We largely sell VERTICAL ads. They stay with the content better, and look less cluttered. You can, however create a horizontal ad if you wish.

What are the some of the boxes you can create for digital ads? Below are some samples of the kind of column, and display ads that you can do.

Column ads (120 px wide to 160 px wide) are best for flat monthly ads that would appear with tables of contents. Display ads are generally 300 pixels or greater wide. They gain the image impact for your message on a single page, much as you would find in any print magazine. Bigger is better.

These formats of ads are generally available only at MLN - The Raw Feed (MLNTheRawFeed.com), our national RSS-newswire syndicate of daily minor league sports news, the Open Source Sports Directory (OSSD.info), and MLNKIds.com. We don't recommend them because they tend to disappear or appear only in one section of the article. 120x48 boxes are used primarily for short transaction reports of athletes changing teams or making the disabled list.

Code Based Ads
Code Based Ads

Of course, we can also put up any code for your ads as well, for links or for tracking or both. If your ad is generated from code from a remote server, just provide us with the full HTML text code of the ad.

Creative Restrictions

Creative Restictions

All this freedom, of course, comes at a price. Our electronic publications are magazine format, not websites.

When you build a web ad, it's really the same as as magazine ad. 90% of it is branding. Very few people click through on ads relative to reading a publication if they are reading a quality magazine online. You want them to see your ad, react to your ad, and even point out to other people where it is so they can react to it.

This is one of the only sites on the web where you can buy real display space. Use it.

Our editors maintain final editorial approval on all ads submitted to MLN publications.

Animations that are distracting may only run three times, no endless looping. If you haven't made your point after thirty seconds, you aren't going to do so.

Video clips are allowed if a play button is provided that gives the user the option of turning on the promotion. No auto runs.

NO FLASHING ICONS of any kind, including WINNER, and other cheap-looking webby promotions. Any other questions, please email your MLN advertising rep.

For code-based ads, they must be fully tested and working. They must produce an ad at the size ordered. They cannot slow page load times down. If your ad server is repeatedly backed up, and your ads slow down our page loads, they will be removed immediately without credit to you or your client.
