Mike Capps has received numerous awards over his career, including an Emmy Nomination and Cable Ace Award for his coverage of the end of the Siege in Waco, Texas. He has been awarded the Alfred I. DuPont Columbia Award, the George Foster Peabody Award, and the Texas Headliners Award. Now, we are honored to bestow the crown jewel upon his distinguished broadcasting career... The Ralphie Award.

We have had a number of broadcasters lobby heavily for this year's Ralphie for the person behind the mike, but we can think of no Mike behind the mike more deserving in all of minor league sports than broadcaster, author, reporter, and TV anchor Mike Capps, who, along with his recognizable voice, brings 27 years of news experience to the Round Rock Express in the hills just beyond the city limits of Austin, Texas.

Capps begins his seventh year as the Director of Broadcasting for the Round Rock Express, part of a ten year sports broadcasting career which includes three major league games with ESPN Radio, one in 2005 and two in 1998.

He has been a reporter, bureau chief and executive sports director for WFAA-TV Dallas / Ft. Worth, an assignments manager and deputy bureau chief for ABC news in St. Louis, and also a weekend anchor for KPRC-TV in Houston. While working for CNN, Capps covered the Gulf War, the Midwest Floods, the overthrow of the Haitian Government and the FBI siege in Waco, Texas.

In addition to his news and broadcasting experience, Capps has also authored a book with legendary scout Red Murff entitled "The Scout: Searching for the Best in Baseball." Murff was the scout that uncovered Express owner Nolan Ryan.

All that is pretty impressive, but what makes him true Ralphie material? Capps loves what he does, does it better than anybody else, and enjoys the heck out of life. Mike, who could work pretty much anywhere he wants, only broadcasts minor league baseball games for the Express by choice.

After a number of years on the news side of the business, he chose baseball broadcasting, and this niche of the game in particular.

Unlike a number of his peers, who are counting the days until ESPN or Fox call them for that big national job, he is quite happy, thank you, doing an exceptional job covering minor league games in the No. 1 minor league ballpark in America (See: MLN Top Ten Ballparks 2006) for the Ryan family, some of the best owners in minor league sports (See: Businessmen of the Year 2004).

More than that, though, Mike is one of the true greats of the game, both at the field and in his daily life.

His on-air calls are the stuff that baseball childhood memories are made of. He is the Round Rock Express to thousands of fans tuning in across the greater Austin metroplex. Off the field, he is one of the true gentlemen of the game, who is respected and admired by anyone who has had the pleasure of working with him, or even just meeting him.

Sure, the Emmy and the Cable Ace mark particular high points in Mike's career. Knowing who you are in life, and where you are supposed to be, and doing that incredibly well, is a gift that few people will ever have. We think this Ralphie marks the highest point in Mike Capps life, and we at MLN salute his professional, and personal success.
