05/19/01 - Mandalay Sports Entertainment has sold the Lake Elsinore Storm,
its entry in the Class-A California League.
The sale comes after the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues
said that Mandalay Sports Entertainment (MSE) CEO Hank Stickneys interest
in both the Mandalay-owned Storm and the Valley Baseball-owned Rancho Cucamonga
Quakes was a conflict of interest.
Beyond his role as CEO
of MSE, Stickney is part of a group called Valley Baseball Inc, which owns
the Quakes, another California League team.
The National Association is the organization that oversees the minor leagues
that are affiliated with Major League Baseball.
According to Ryan Rose, media relations manager for the Quakes, Valley Baseball
is comprised of six partners, including veteran actor Mark Harmon. Valley
is not affiliated with Mandalay.
MSE now owns three minor league baseball teams, in Las Vegas, Shreveport,
Louisiana, and Dayton, Ohio.
According to Lake Elsinores assistant director of Media Relations,
Dan McCabe, the team was purchased by San Diego native Gary Jacobs.
Jacobs is the founder and managing director of Jacobs Investment Company,
a firm involved in real estate development project across the country.
Through Thursday, the Storm (Class A Affiliate of the San Diego Padres)
are 30-10 and in first place in the California Leagues South Division,
while the Quakes (Class A affiliate of the Anaheim Angels) sit in fourth
place at 19-21.
