The current Cannons may have no name as yet in Albuquerque for 2003, but
they do have a new GM.

Albuquerque
- 3.21.02 - Mel Kowalcuk will step into the shoes of General Manager for
the Triple-A baseball team that will call The Land of Enchantment home in 2003. The team will play ball in the city's renovated Sports-Stadium.
Kowalcuk
comes from the Edmonton Trappers organization, where he was the General
Manager. He has been
involved in baseball for more than twenty-one years. "I am pleased,
and ecstatic to be coming to Albuquerque," says Kowalcuk .
He
has also been involved in minor league hockey, and the ISL soccer league. His experience will add ammunition to a city that is craving
minor league baseball.
Mel
will get underway from the ground up in Albuquerque.
"I will start out at a office near the stadium, with a small
sales force, and get a feel for the community," say Kowalcuk.
The
new GM plans to try out the usual marketing plans that a minor league professional
team employs, but also knows that he will have to be creative.
The
team that called Albuquerque home prior to being sold was reputable, and
prided itself on being an affordable source of
family entertainment.
The
community went through an up-hill climb to bring back baseball to its city.
Although
a brand new stadium was shot down in a special vote, the decision to renovate
the old Sports-Stadium was reached.
This
in turn led the Calgary Cannons (PCL), who will leave the Great White North
after this season to move to the largest city in New Mexico.
Hopefully
the pieces of the minor league baseball puzzle will fall into place for
the baseball fans in the desert of the New Mexico.
