Steamwheelers
Lose Their Quarterback
A
broken leg will have Tony Zimmerman out for two to three weeks.
Starting
quarterback for the Quad-City Steamwheelers, Tony Zimmerman suffered a hairline
fracture of his left fibula in Saturday's 68-36 win over Wichita.
"My
biggest fear is a reality," coach Rich Ingold said Sunday night.
The
search is on for another quarterback, but Ingold added the little-tested
backup Dan McMillan will likely be the starter Saturday night when the Wheelers
face the Wichita Stealth in a rematch.
McMullen's
lone Saturday snap resulted in a 38-yard touchdown to Chris Anthony. A former
St. Ambrose star, it was McMullen's first professional snap at the quarterback
spot.
Starting
training camp as a receiver/linebacker, he has played that position throughout
the season while also doubling as backup quarterback.
"Danny
knows the system and the terminology and I am going to give him a ton of
reps in practice this week to get him ready," Ingold said.
Even
though, Ingold made several calls Sunday and expects to make more to secure
another quarterback, either as a backup to McMullen or as a challenger as
the starter.
It
hasn't been decided whether or not to put Zimmerman on short-term injured
reserve list. He would have to sit out for three weeks.
There
is a slim chance that Zimmerman could be ready to return in time for the
June 1st game with Peoria at the Mark. But the coach said he
talked to Zimmerman Sunday and the prognosis isn't necessarily rosy for
a quick return.
"Tony's
a tough kid," he said, "but he can't move his toes today. I have
to go with the notion that he won't be ready for Peoria. I've got to get
another guy."
