The
'Colorado Crush'
The newest AFL team finally
has a name.
Colorado
Arena Football announced that the team has been named the "Colorado
Crush" based on a name the team contest. Leading the team is legendary
quarterback, John Elway, who has teamed with Kroenke Sports Enterprises
and Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen to bring Arena Football to Colorado.
"
The Arena Football League is an extremely fan-friendly league and we felt
it would be appropriate to have the fans of Colorado involved in the selection
of the team name," said John Elway, the team's President and CEO.
"
I think "Crush" is a great name. It has a special meaning because
it has obvious ties to the awesome tradition of football here in Denver
and the entire state of Colorado. The name "Crush" also speaks
to the physical, hard-hitting nature of Arena Football."
The
name the team contest, conducted by The Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News
in conjunction with John Elway AutoNation, received more than 9000 submissions.
"
I have always known that the football fans of Colorado are the best around,
but we were overwhelmed by the incredible response to this contest,"
said Elway. "With such great fans, I can't wait until our team takes
the field in February."
The
Crush will begin playing in February 2003 at Pepsi Center. The team's colors,
logos, uniforms, and helmets will be unveiled in the weeks to come.
