Jacksonvile, Fl. - 02.16.02 - The Jacksonville Dixie Blues need money. Two
weeks ago the Dixie Blues upset the Tampa Bay Force to qualify for the championship
game, where they are supposed to face the California Quake in San
Diego.
Earlier last week, the Jacksonville City Council voted nay to
giving the Blues $18,000 in taxpayer dollars to fund the womens football
teams quest for a national championship on February 24, 2002.
Individuals who are interested are kicking in with donations from $5 to
$1000, putting the Dixie Blues more than half way to their $20,000 goal.
I want to help the team out. I think what they are doing is great,
but I dont think we should be using tax dollars to help them,
Council Vice President Suzanne Jenkins said. The way to help them
is to try and find money for them in the community.
Jenkins, who voted against the $18,000 proposal, manned phones, raising
$5,500 for the team. Wayne Weaver, owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars, contributed
$1,000.
Donations have been trickling in, putting the team close to $11,000.
Needing $20,000 by early in this week, individual players are ready to put
thousands of dollars on their credit cards. Then after they return they
will resume fundraising efforts to pay off their tab.
Player, Jackie Solmos said, Well find it somehow. There are
some rocks still out there we can overturn.
