Hawaii - 09.19.01 - There will be new legends in football this fall coming from the Aloha state, where the Women's American Football League (WAFL) will write a new chapter in women's professional football.
The WAFL announced that they have have signed the Hawaii Legends to play in the upcoming 2000-2001 season.
The WAFL is a full-contact, NFL rules, American tackle football league with teams across the nation.
The Legends will play in the Pacific Conference versus teams from San Diego, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Berkeley/Oakland, Eugene, Portland, Tacoma, Seattle, and Vancouver.
The
season will kickoff November 3rd.
League
commissioner, Carter Turner concluded negotiations with team owner Nancy
McMahon today.
The
Legends were already part of an inter-island league, making the organization
one of the few "veteran" teams in a young league.
"They've been playing football on the Islands for at least 3 years now and were well represented by the "Hawaiian Punch" of Llima Vicente, Sue Miller, and Nancy McMahon at the 2000 Stars Over Miami All Star game at the Orange Bowl," said Turner.
"Ask
veteran Daytona Beach Barracuda running back Casey Chamberlain ( U of Wisconsin-River
Falls) who personally felt the one-two punch of Vicente and Miller in a
vicious tackle at the Orange Bowl that had the crowd buzzing."
The Legends experience was evident in their April 28th 28-8 win over the WAFL's Sacramento Sirens in Honolulu.
The Legends wore down a very good Sacramento Squad, who held on to a 8-7 lead into the third quarter.
Despite one quarterback sack and four tackles from veteran d-end Tina "Taco" Rogers (UC Davis), and a stellar iron-woman performance by the Sirens "D-train" Dana Macintyre, the strong Hawaiian squad wore down the mainlanders with Legends vet Llima Vicente leading the way.
The rest of the Pacific Conference teams had better tighten up their chin straps. The Legends may get to earn their name with the kind of play that they've been exhibiting in the pre-season.
