Cancer claims former MVP Les Douglas
10.23.02 - Les Douglas, who was named the most valuable player of the American
Hockey League for the 1949-50 season, died of cancer on Sunday in Kingston,
Ont.
He was 83 years of age.
A Calder Cup champion with the Indianapolis Capitals in 1942 and the Cleveland
Barons in 1951, Douglas ranks 28th on the league's all-time scoring list
with 621 points (226 goals, 395 assists) in 560 games over 10 AHL seasons
(1939-43, 45-51).
He led the league in scoring in 1945-46 and again in 1949-50, when he became
just the fifth pro player ever to reach the 100-point plateau in a season.
Douglas, who also captured a Stanley Cup championship with the Detroit Red
Wings in 1943, was named a First Team AHL All-Star in 1946 and 1950, and
was a Second Team All-Star selection in 1947.
He is survived by his daughter, Kelly, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
