Success follows Mike Keane of the Manitoba Moose like a shadow. His middle name should be Stanley.
He played for the Montreal Canadiens, won a Stanley Cup, and eventually became their captain. He was traded to the Colorado Avalanche along with Patrick Roy, where he won a second Stanley Cup. Keane went on to play in New York Rangers for a season, then was signed by the Dallas Stars where he won, you guessed it, a third Stanley Cup.
Over his last couple of seasons, Mike was signed by the St. Louis Blues, then went back to Colorado, then on to Vancouver.
Under the new NHL rules, the Canucks sent Keane down after one season to play for their farm team, the Manitoba Moose.
“With the new NHL, a lot of the teams are moving towards youth and that included Vancouver.” Keane says.
A lot of players might have called it quits after being sent down to the minors, but Mike still has a passion for the game.
“I grew up in Winnipeg and have a lot of family and friends here, so it wasn’t a very hard decision for me to continue my hockey career in the AHL with the Moose.”
While he’d like to get back to the NHL, Keane knows how to play his role, and where he is at this stage in his career.
“The NHL is the best hockey in the world and every hockey player wants to play there. That being said, Winnipeg is a great hockey town and a great fit for me and my family. I just go out and play and try to help the Moose succeed.”
