– Although defenseman Alex Todd is going back to school, he's
not going to learn; he is going to teach.
Todd is hanging up his
skates following a three-year stint in minor pro hockey and will immediately
assume the assistant coaching duties at Utica College in New York.
Lubbock Cotton Kings
Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Chris Dashney were sad to see
one his top blueliners go.
"We wanted Alex
back," said Dashney. "He was a good player and a solid person.
He wants to get a head start on coaching at the college level and we wish
him all the best."
Collegiate ice will be
nothing new for the 25 year-old Todd, as he played four years of Division-I
hockey at Union College.
"I know that when
I am 50, I am going to want to throw on the blades every morning," acknowledges
Todd. "I liked playing, but I wanted more consistency and a head start
on coaching."
Following last season,
Todd made it very clear to the hockey world he wanted a coaching job. He attended
an American Hockey Coaching Association meeting in Florida, and with the help
of a few calls, Todd met with and was hired by Utica Head Coach Gary Heenan.
As an assistant, Todd's
job duties will include, mediation, recruiting, as well providing occasional
advice and help for the head coach.
Todd is optimistic about
the future, but is very nostalgic when talking about is playing career.
"If I could, I
would play four years of college hockey, three years of pro and then hop in
a time machine and do it again," he said.
