The
Bullet's Number Is Up
CHL Indy
Ice to Retire Berger's Number At Ceremonies March 24th
Indianapolis - 03/21/01
- Mike "The Bullet" Berger (pronounced buhr-zhay), one
of the hardest slapshots in hockey, will become only the third player
in this history of the Indy Ice franchise to have his jersey retired by
his club. Berger joins Ray Compton (#1) and Sean Williams (#9) as his
jersey number is hoisted into the rafters.
Berger is a veteran
of over 772 professional outings. He has done tours in the NHL, IHL, and
eight passes with the CHL. During his career he has racked up 155 goals
and 304 assists.
The Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta native went pro in 1986, playing for the
then Indy Checkers (Now the ECHL franchise in Charlotte).
Minnesota's second
pick in the 1985 NHL draft, the Northstars were impressed enough with
his rookie season with the Checkers to award him a shot at the NHL during
the 1987-1988 season. A poor start by the team to the season sent the
Northstars back to the drawing board. Minnesota assigned Berger to the
Kalamazoo Wings of the IHL for the remainder of that season.
Berger departed the
CHL last season leading defensemen with 310 points (105G, 205A) in 459
CHL meets.
With a slapshot registered
at 101MPH at the 1999 CHL All-Stars, Berger is one of the few minor league
players to make the Hockey Hall of Fame.
