Kirkpatrick, who has
muscular dystrophy and uses a wheelchair, learned to play street hockey
at an MDA camp one summer.
"I was inspired
by the movie 'Rudy.'", says Kirkpatrick. "He worked so hard
to reach a level beyond his stature. He was so tough and believed so much
in himself that he gave you the feeling that you could do anything, that
nothing could stop you."
Kirkpatrick, and Gordie
& Colleen Howe, dubbed "Mr. & Mrs. Hockey" appear on
commemorative boxes of Frosted Flakes and Honey Nut Toasted Oats. A portion
of the sale of these boxes goes to the Howe Foundation. The Foundation
is the brainchild of Colleen, and dedicated to helping children in need.
The Foundation provides a van which is specially fitted to help Kirkpatrick
get around.
The Howes and Kirkpatrick
will raise additional funds for the Foundation by autographing and selling
boxes at the Ice game.
Is this modern day
Rudy ready for the Ice? "There isn't a chance that puck is gettting
past me," Kirkpatrick says. "I plan on going in the record books
with a shutout."
