the cup.
Fresno - 10.28.02 - The Taylor Cup Tour attracted fans of all ages, bringing smiles to the faces of everyone who shared in its glory.
The Tour officially kicked off on June 7, 2002 at Grizzlies Stadium in downtown Fresno. The Fresno Grizzlies invited the recently crowned champions of the West Coast Hockey League, the Fresno Falcons, to a night of festivities that included the Taylor Cup Playoff MVP Kris Porter throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.
Even though the Grizzlies lost the game, Fresno fans bore witness to start of something much bigger.
The Taylor Cup went anywhere and everywhere in the coming weeks as part of the Tour. It made its way to golf tournaments, farmer's markets, school carnivals, grand openings, and concert's in the park.
There was no event too small for the Taylor Cup Tour. After the dust settled, the Cup had made over 50 stops during its trip through the Golden State.
It made it's way as far north as Sacramento where California State Assemblyman Mike Briggs honored the Falcons with a special resolution for their Taylor Cup Championship. It found it's way down to San Diego where the Cup spent several days in the offices of Chandar Sports, the parent company of the Fresno Falcons.
The Cup even made a stop in the city by the bay and spent an evening in San Francisco at the University of San Francisco's Sport Management program.
As summer turned to fall, and the new season approached, the Taylor Cup Tour gave way to the sound of skates and sticks. Coming to a grand conclusion on the evening of October 18th, the Cup took center stage. In the darkness of Selland Arena, two spotlights shone down, as if from the heavens, on the Cup.
As the Cup glistened in the light, it's travels no longer mattered. The only important thing was that the Fresno Falcons were Taylor Cup Champions, and that the Cup had found a home in the Central Valley.
