The Carolina Hurricanes’ first-round pick (25th overall) in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, goalie Cam Ward had a tremendously successful and decorated junior career, going 102-40-15 in three seasons, while leading Red Deer to two WHL finals.

In 2003-04, the 20-year-old Ward was named the Player of the Year and the Goaltender of the Year in the Western Hockey League; as well as the Canadian Major Junior Goaltender of the Year and a First Team All-Star.

This season, Cam made his professional debut with the Lowell Lock Monsters of the American Hockey League, and he has steadily improved over the last few months.

In December, Ward was 5-1-1 with a 1.10 goals-against average, a .965 save percentage and 2 shutouts, earning AHL Rookie of the Month honors. He now ranks seventh among all league netminders with a 2.15 goals-against average and sixth with a .931 save percentage.

Some sources have stated that Cam stood a very good shot of cracking the Hurricane’s roster as a backup, if not for the NHL lockout.

Nonetheless, the experience he is gaining in the minors this year might be more beneficial to his development in the long run.
