In his first season, Polak has had to overcome language barriers, adjust to American style hockey, and adjust to a rookie season in North America.
“One thing I am really learning how to do is take care of my body better,” Polak said. “I am learning the importance of eating and training right.”
“(Getting accustomed to North America) has been the biggest adjustment,” Director of operations for the Iowa Stars Scott White said. “A player as young as he is, is going to have his ups and downs. He has great offensive ability and his board play has really improved. He’s got the instincts, he just needs to be able to put two-and-two together.”
Polak said he felt one of the more difficult adjustments has been his transition to the style of play.
“The style of play has been very similar to the NHL,” Polak said. “I’ve had to adjust to the speed, the difference in this size of the rink, and the way they play defense.”
Polak’s coach, Dave Allison, is impressed with the offensive potential Polak possesses.
“He has a lot of ability you just can’t teach,” Allison said. “He has such great instincts.”
One aspect that Allison said he has struggled with at times has been the grueling schedule the AHL players have to endure.
“Adjusting to an 80-game schedule, he is occasionally going to hit the wall,” Allison said.
At training camp, Polak was overwhelmed at the opportunity to play with the Dallas Stars for three exhibition games.
“That was an overwhelming feeling,” Polak said. “I just realized ‘wow, I am here.”
