In the off-season Steve Bernier was on a mission to get the call to the NHL. That work has paid dividends as he is scheduled to practice with the San Jose Sharks on Feb. 25.
Bernier’s Feb. 24 game against the Peoria Rivermen could potentially be his last in the AHL.
“This summer I really worked on my speed,” Bernier said. “I really wanted to be more physical by making my upper and lower body stronger.”
Bernier is trying not to get too complacent. He feels that getting called up is just another step.
“Getting called up has been a big day. I realize you can’t get too excited and you have to remember the things that got you to this point,” Bernier said. “I don’t want to just say ‘I played in the NHL.’ I want to stay there.”
Teammate and roommate Josh Hennessy (MLN FAB50 Hockey 2006 No. 29) says that Bernier is an inspiration to him.
“To see him doing so well is awesome,” Hennessy said. “It really makes you realize just how close to the NHL you are.”
Head Coach Roy Sommer, who is in his eighth season as the master of the Cleveland Barons estate has developed over 60 players that made it to the NHL. He speaks highly of Bernier’s work ethic and potential.
“He has done everything we’ve asked him to do,” Sommer said. “He has a good shot, he protects the puck well, and he holds on to the puck.
Sommer feels that Bernier has the potential to be on an NHL team’s first or second line.
Bernier said when he goes up to the NHL, he is going to approach every day with the same mentality that got him to that level.
“I really have to keep thinking to myself every day to get stronger and faster in the NHL,” Bernier said. “Mentally, you have to be able to play at that level night in and night out, and I have to continue to stay focused.”
Bernier was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the 2003 draft as the 16th overall pick. In 2004-2005 Bernier led the Wildcats in goals (35), assists (36), points (71), GWG, PPG, and was 2nd in penalty minutes (114). He was named to Team QMJHL in the ADT Canada-Russia Challenge. He also led Moncton in goals (6), assists (13), points (19) and penalty minutes (22) during 12 games of post-season play.
