Only four days before he died, Potvin was upbeat, comparing this edition of the Frostbite to his ‘92 championship Red Wings.
“Halfway through the season nobody would have picked us to go very far,” he said. “But we got along together off the ice and stuck up for each other. That’s what makes teams stronger, the ups and downs, the things you go through.”
He was passionate about his club.
“This team just doesn’t understand and doesn’t realize how good it can be,” he said.
Potvin, whose motto was “family first,” may have found the sixty minutes, and all of the preparation leading up to it, were not enough to lessen the emotional pain that he was laboring under.
There are many who wish tonight that they could have done something more to lighten his load, to ease his burden somehow. It is the natural reaction of friends and loved ones who want to make sense of what seems so senseless. The world moves on, but Potvin's spirit will remain very much a part of everyone that he has touched.
His players are now bonded now by a common purpose: The Adirondack Frostbite possess a will to succeed, a daily celebration of the philosophies that Marc Potvin espoused and used to achieve in his life.
Each jersey bears the name tag, “Potsie,” above the player’s own name, a constant reminder of their unified purpose.
Prior to Potvin’s memorial tribute, people were invited to write down their favorite memories of him in the Civic Center lobby.
A long-time fan wrote:
“The way you played made watching the game a pleasure.”
